SIA Getlini EKOKaudzīšu iela 57, Rumbula, Ropažu nov, LV-2121, Latvia https://g.page/getliniEko?shareGetliņi EKO is the largest municipal solid waste landfill in the Baltic states. Since 26 October 2015, biodegradable waste has been used for production of biogas, meanwhile materials and metal products useful for processing have been delivered to companies engaged in the recovery and recycling of these materials.1. To use the biogas obtained as a by-product for growing vegetables
2. To use the landfill gas to produce electricity which is then sold to the local electricity company
SIA Getliņi EKO produces heat as a by-product, the use of which is limited. Their attitude to environmental safety does not allow them to simply release the heat “into the air”, so they constructed greenhouses and grow vegetables in them, since the heat they produce is relatively cheap. Modern greenhouses that are 5.5 m high and span a total area of 11,412 m2 are built in the territory of SIA Getliņi EKO landfill. Greenhouse plants occupy an area of 10,512 m2 and amount to 25,000 seedlings planted. Annually, SIA Getliņi EKO produces about 500 tonnes of tomatoes. The greenhouses are equipped with climate control facilities which provide the conditions necessary for growing plants. Cultivated plants are grown in mineral wool and hung in planting beds positioned 70 cm above the ground level. The nutrition for the plants is provided with the assistance of computerised fertiliser mixing and dosage programme which provides plants with the necessary nutrients. https://www.getlini.lv/en

In addition, they have created several videos on their YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2Q8ExL_qX_3g7nLWFBBJMQ) on circulation of water in the city, on how to use water in a smart way, and also an educational video on responsible use of drinking water.
They also have Instagram and Facebook profiles where they organise contests and educate society about water.
Their website has a map displaying all the places in Latvia where it is possible to refill one's water bottle free of charge (https://uvitamins.lv/kur-to-meklet/).

Association Be the LightCēsis, LatviaThe association is located in the city of Cēsis and their aim is to make sure that each member of the society has food to put on their table and clothes to wear.1. To ensure that everyone has something to eat
2. To ensure that people who are in need of clothes and footwear can go to them and get these things
This association does many things.
One of their projects is a community fridge in Cēsis where people can leave food products for others who are less fortunate. It is also a great way to reduce food waste if you need to clear out your fridge before a vacation or in other situations. There are some companies in Latvia who donate food to this community fridge so that the people who need food can go there and take some. This is a great initiative which teaches people to take care of their community and to make sure everyone has food to put on the table for their family.
They also participate in various charity activities, for example, they accept donations of clothes and footwear, and everyone in need of these things can go to them and take them free of charge.

This project aims to combat market inefficiency, creating an alternative market for “ugly” fruit and vegetables that can change consumption patterns. A market that generates value for farmers and consumers and fights both food waste and the unnecessary expenditure.Reduce the tons of quality food that are returned to the land every year by farmers
Avoid the unnecessary expenditure of the resources used in its production, such as water, arable land, energy and the working time.
Changing consumption patterns, this project intends that in the future all quality fruit and vegetable products will be marketed equally, regardless of size, color and shape.
The Fruta Feia cooperative arises from the need to reverse these trends in the normalization of fruits and vegetables that have nothing to do with food safety and quality issues. As parallel impacts are the population's awareness of the problem of food waste
and the fact that ugly foods are not garbage, and also the possibility of consuming seasonal and regional products at a lower price.

ReduceEncourage people to use new technologies for the creation and spreading of the necessary material for the activities.1. To reduce paper waste
2. To make the material accesible for everybody
With this practice, the main aim is to reduce paper waste within the organisation. Some measures that can be taken are: using collaborative platforms such as Google Drive, sending e-mail instead of letters, or advertising trough social networks, instead of printing posters. Another advantage is that everybody will have access to it, as it is on the internet.
RecycleMake recycling easier in the local by installing the necessary trash cans to recycle. 1. To make recycling easier to the organisation membersBy installing the trash cans for the different waste types, it will be easier for the members to recycle. The best option is to put the trash cans for plastics and organic waste in a place like the kitchen or the coffee area and cans for paper in other places around the local.

Truancy and school failureSerranía de Ronda, SpainThis project aims to colaborate with programs from seven high schools to fight against truancy and school failure, through the development of a program that specifically follows those vulnerable students. It also involves the student's family to take part in their educative development and educative community in general. The aim is to boost young people's participation in the educational community, in representative bodies in educational centers and in Red de Mediadores of these centers, as well as to promote the figure of youth correspondents in educational centers. To sum up, they want to encourage youth associations. Likewise, the active participation of families in the educational community and in the school council is required. Besides, family intervention teams from community social services aim to improve their services, since they look after a large number of families, and need to prioritize high-risk families, leavind "lower risk" families outside the necessary attention that allows the modification of truant behaviors. Finally, families tend to want their kinds to spend as much time at school as possible, which shows how much responsibility they give to educational institutions. Juglares is a project which aims at collaborating with different programmes from the seven secondary schools in the region. There are some common characteristics among young people from these secondary schools that lead local agents to act carefully to avoid the risck of truancy and school failure. There is a noted young group from the secondary schools that are already at a disadvantage (personal, familiar, social or cultural) compared to the rest of young people. That is why they need special measures to meet their needs. Two types of action are taken: dynamisation of young people's participation in the educational community and dynamisation of families' participation in the educational community. Within the educational centres and while the project Juglares is being developed, the people responsible for the porgramme are present in the different meetings to talk about issues related to participation and implications of young people and their families in the educational community. In every meeting and interview a report is filled in order to keep track of the process and each specific case. A protocol has been established for those who have llost the right to attend the centre and actions and activities are carried out to support the educational tasks entrusted to them. Moreover, they carry out other tasks to help young people to improve their attitude and behaviour to avoid the possibility of dropping out of the educational centre. http://www.cederserraniaderonda.com/ (Español)
Environmental educationGranadaCreation of a Nature Classroom where young volunteers acquire knowledge on conservation and ringing oriented towards environmental education through seminars and other activities. The main objective is to promote the altruistic action of young people in contributing to the environment conservation and environmental sustainability.
1. To contribute to young people's training from a practical point of view so that their collaboration with entities, that carry out environmental activities, is as profitable as possible.
2. To disseminate the Humedal de Padul as a referent protected area for environmental and ornithological volunteering by means of different awareness-raising and training activities.
3. To develop actions and campaigns that aim to promote and increase the environmental value of Granada.
EOP is a project that arises from the collaboration between El Aguadero nature classroom and the volunteering group Estación Ornitológica de Padul (EOP). It was created in 2007 to contribute to the conservation and dissemination of environmental values in Granada, specially in Humedal de Padul and Reserva Ecológica de la Alondra Ricotí. The main mission is to involve people to achieve the goals and be able to create a space for education, communication and direct environmental cosial action. It is a classroom where they are developing an environmental education programme called "programa de formación de divulgación del voluntariado ambiental de jóvenes". They carry out a recruitment process and they divide volunteers into three groups, taking in consideration their preferences. This results in three groups of vounteers for public use, conservation and ringing. Seminars are held during a year and they have different contents relatec to the main topic of each group. The training they get is very diverse but also specific, and it is a great opportunity for the volunteers to acquire knowledge on environmental education and nature conservation. After that year, the people who have participated can continue to receive training from other projects of the Estación Ornitológica, as long as they are registeres as volunteer staff.https://www.juntadeandalucia.es/export/drupaljda/DOSSIER_BBPP_JUVENTUD.pdf (español)
